Some of the festivals in Great Britain are state holidays, when people have days off, like Easter or Christmas. There are also others holidays which are celebrated after people come back from work. They are for example Halloween, etc.

New Year´s Eve

New Year’s Day is celebrated on 1st January. Peoples send New years greetings. The biggest celebrations are in London on Trafalgar square.

Valentines Day

Is very popular in Great Britain. It is also called Lover’s Day. This day is for people in love. People send Valentine’s Day cards with Valentine’s wishes. Most of the cards aren’t signed. People also gift jewelry, chocolates, candy, or dinner at a nice restaurant.

St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. It is a national holiday for the Irish people. People where green clothes and eat green food.  All pubs and restaurants are this day full.

Easter Monday

Easter is for most people the symbol of spring.  The symbol of Easter, the Easter Bunny, is believed to bring or hide Easter eggs and other chocolate sweets on Easter Sunday. Children hide eggs in the grass, bushes, and trees. Some peoples make a special race on Easter. Decorated eggs are lined up on a small hill and rolled down the hill. Whose egg rolls the longest without cracking becomes the Easter champion.

Halloween

Is a celebration on the night of October 31st. Children wear costumes and go to peoples‘ homes saying „Trick or treat!“ to ask for candy and people give it to them. People often dress up as ghosts, witches, or other scary things for Halloween.

Christmas

Christmas is the most important and popular festival in Britain celebrated in December. People in Britain and other English speaking countries start to celebrate X-mas on 25th December in the morning when unwrapping present. This day is called Christmas day. On Christmas Day people have a festive dinner, usually around 2 pm. People eat roast turkey with roasted potatoes followed by Christmas pie and Christmas pudding. The day after Christmas day is Boxing Day, 26th December. On this day children play with toy and adults relax.
