These days, people travel much more than they did in the past. There are new means of transport, cars and planes have become faster. People can travel to faraway places.
People travel for various reasons. Some people travel to school or work, others travel for pleasure.
They like visiting famous sights in our republic or abroad. Besides, they meet new people, make friends, have unusual expriences and information, learn foreign languages, culture and habits of other countries. On the other hand, we can get into dangerous situations, be robbed, attacked, catch diseases or have accidents. By travelling we spoil the environment. Cars exhaust poisonous substances, people put litter in the wood, are noisy and pick flowers.
There are two ways of travelling: by public means of transport or on our own. We can travel by land, by water and by air. Young people prefer hitchhiking or biking. Most people use cars, buses and trains. Sportsmen often walk, romantics like planes and ships.
Travelling by car is comfortable. We can stop wherever we want but we must have a driving licence, know the traffic rules. We can get into a traffic jam or have a car accident.
Buses are expensive, crowded with people and have bad connection to some villages. Long– distance coaches are more comfortable, with better seats, a video, toilet, coffee-machines and air-conditioning.
Trains leave from the railway stations from the platforms. The conductor checks our single or return tickets. We can buy our tickets in the ticket office in the railway station or book our tickets in advance.
When we want to travel by plane we need to buy a plane ticket – at an airport or a travel agent’s in advance. Tickets are sold in advance or booked. At the airport passenger check in and receive a board ticket. Luggage is left at the check -in desk. Only a single piece of hand luggage can be taken on board. Passengers have to go to the passport control and then to the departure hall.
In big cities there is an underground with several tracks. It’s the fastest means of urban public transport.
When we go abroad, we must have a valid passport or identity card and to some countries a visa. We need to change money to foreign currency or euro in the bank or exchange offices. Knowledge of foreign languages is important for understanding.
Some people prefer travelling on their own, others prefer travelling with travel agencies. We have to pay for transportation, accomodation, guide, health and accident insurance.
We can have different types of accomodation. It depends on our taste and money. We can order accomodation in a double or single room, we can have bed and breakfast, half board of full board. Young people usually travel with backpacks and stay in a tent or in chalets because they have not got much money.
